LightForce is hiring its first IP attorney to support our rapidly growing, wildly innovative, customer-obsessed team! Will it be you?!

If you have a passion for disruptive technology that puts the patient at the center of every decision and you want to join a team that is actively raising the standard of personalized care, this may be the role for you. As our first in-house IP attorney, you will directly interact with technical and non-technical team members, at all levels of leadership, to assess our growing patent portfolio, harvest innovations, and coordinate with and direct outside counsel on the preparation, filing, and prosecution of our IP. This role also involves close partnership with product managers and our engineering teams to counsel regarding IP issues arising within the context of product development, and some commercial transaction work to support business goals. The ideal candidate will become a trusted advisor and thought partner to teams across the business, as we collectively obsess over our customers and their patients.

The successful candidate must have a strong track record of high performance, the desire to build trust across multiple business units, and have a passion for solving customer problems. Compensation based on experience and includes equity compensation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on intellectual property rights such as patents, trade secrets, licenses, copyrights and trademarks.
  • Provide advice and assistance on all matters relating to invention management and preparing patent applications on new inventions.
  • Draft, negotiate, structure and review a broad range of customer-facing and/or vendor agreements, and technology and commercial transactions, including strategic partnerships, inbound and outbound license agreements, NDAs, consulting agreements, services agreement, MSAs, SOWs, etc.
  • Identify, anticipate, provide timely evaluation of and communicate risks, and legal and business issues, with internal stakeholders.
  • Explain, simplify, and advise on complex technical information for a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Coordinate advice with cross-functional stakeholders, including Product, Engineering, Marketing, Clinical, etc.
  • Participate in special projects and additional duties, as required.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
  • 5+ years of legal experience (with at least two years at a law firm or the USPTO). Some in-house experience preferred.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts.
  • Preferred but not required:
    • Education and/or relevant work experience in technology areas related to any medical, dental, pharmaceutical, or medical device field preferred.
    • Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and personal experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications (in the medical, dental, pharmaceutical, or medical device field preferred).

  • Effective oral and written communication skills in communicating business and legal issues to a wide variety of audiences including in-house and outside counsel, engineers, and business leaders, at all levels of the organization.
